Cost Analysis

Deadhead Cost Per Mile

Total Deadhead Cost

Fuel Cost Per Mile $0.00/mi
Fixed Cost Per Mile $0.00/mi
Fuel Portion (Total) $0.00

How this works

We calculate your fuel cost based on price and MPG, then add your variable costs and allocated fixed costs (if provided) to show the true cost of every empty mile.

How deadhead cost is calculated

  • Fuel cost per mile = Fuel price ÷ MPG

  • Fixed cost per mile = Fixed costs for period ÷ Total miles in period (allocated based on utilization).

  • Deadhead cost per mile = Fuel CPM + Fixed CPM + Variable CPM

  • Total deadhead cost = Deadhead CPM × Deadhead miles

Note: If you don’t enter fixed costs and total miles, fixed cost per mile is treated as $0/mi. This keeps the calculator simple and avoids divide-by-zero issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use loaded MPG or empty MPG?
Use the MPG that best matches how you run empty miles. If your empty MPG is higher than loaded, using empty MPG gives a more accurate estimate.
Do variable costs include fuel?
